Rugs come in a variety of colours and dyes. There are some which are dyed properly and as long as the cleaning is done properly, there won't be complications with the maintenance. On the other hand, there are other dyes processes which make rugs more susceptible to bleeding. Factors that worsen loss of dye in rugs include extreme alkalinity, extreme heat and excessive exposure to water. Here are some tips which can help you properly manage dyed rugs when cleaning them.

Dealing with the over-dyed rug look

Over dyed rugs are treated such that there are two finishes which are dramatic, creating a lasting colour expression. The process of creating the overdyed look begins with the use of harsh chemicals to remove the original dye from the rug. When the original colour has been removed, the rug is treated with a vibrant dye colour. The colours of the rug then blend in and it starts resembling one which was woven using different shades of the dye colour. The cleaning concern with this rug is that the harsh chemicals used to strip the original colour off leave it devalued and very weak. When cleaning this rug therefore, you need to be careful not to ruin it. Inspect the fibres to see if they easily break off when touched.

How to tell whether a rug is overdyed and distressed

The first thing you need to check is the degree to which the rug has been worn out by the bleaching. If you can see through the wool to the cotton warps and wefts, the rug is severely distressed. If this type of rug is washed, the dye in the cotton warps and wefts washes off leaving large white patches. Another indicator of a distressed is by its odour. If you pour a little water on the rug, and you notice a strange smell coming off it, it is possible the rug is overdyed and will be challenging to wash.

PH stabilisers and distressed rugs

One of the treatments which you can use of rugs which have been overdyed is washing them with pH stabilisers. The solution brings down the pH of the rug and reduces the possibility of bleeding while being washed. It also protects the rug from tearing apart.

These are some of the tips which can help you deal with dyed rugs properly. When shopping for rugs, go for those which have vegetable dyes. Also, remember to involve carpet cleaning experts in the processes to prevent bleeding issues.
